Design and function
"Josephinenhutte represents the enjoyment of wine, the elevation of the senses, and the value of genuine craftsmanship. Our products create special moments that present wines at their best," says Kurt Josef Zalto. “This design was inspired by a brilliant-cut diamond which symbolizes the pure, the beautiful and the imperishable."
Glass designer Zalto focuses on the sensory attributes of his design choices, each of which has a specific purpose. In addition to the bend characteristic of the Josephine collection, the decanter has a distinct cone at the base that protrudes inside. This defining design element ensures optimal aeration of the wine as it creates a spiral swirl as soon as it is poured.
"The cone reminds me of the pyramid at the Louvre in Paris, which was originally built for the optimization of the flow of visitors," says Zalto. "We achieve a similar effect with the cone by directing the flow of wine in the decanter. The tip of the cone protruding in from the base allows one to look in at the wine and observe the various shades of its color."
“First and foremost, a decanter must allow the wine to be rapidly enriched with oxygen. We achieve this with the cone as well as the decanter’s large surface area. Any wine in the decanter is presented luxuriously in a harmony of function and design. The delicate body sits wonderfully in the hand and allows the wine to flow perfectly into the glass,” notes Zalto.
Passionately handcrafted
All of the Josephinenhutte glasses and decanters are intricately mouth-blown and handcrafted. Four glassblowers and one finisher work expertly over the course of two days to produce a decanter.
"The decanter is a tribute to the value of the glass craft, which my family has now been practicing with great passion for over two hundred years!” states Zalto.
The Brilliant Magnum decanter will launch later this year.
