Discovering Varela's work online I was blown away by the rigor and consistency of throughout her career, from the Tropicalismo urban scenes of the 60s through the conceptual landscapes of the 70s and 80s and the socially provocative works she has made since. I wanted to give a strong introduction to this little known artist and get Cybèle the most exposure we could, so we are putting her forward when many people travel to Berlin and dedicate time to see exhibitions. I was specifically interested in showing the work from the past 10 years which has deep decolonial intention and also in conversation with ideas of Latino Futurism, radical formations which are at the core of cultural discourses in Berlin at this time. 60 years into her career the work remains not only formally progressive but socially conscious and engaged"
Lee Plested, Berlin-based curator
Latino Futurism involves cultural productions based on technological advancements and radical visions of the future stemming from Chicana/os, Puerto Ricans, Dominican Americans, Cuban Americans, and other Latin American immigrant populations
